Last August,
we visited Dave's old friend Jouni for a day in London. This month, he was on his way to spend some time in Switzerland for vacation and stopped in for a couple days to return the favor. We stayed in Olivet and Orléans the whole visit and most of us had a really nice time. (Dave had a bit of stomach flu and had a less nice time than the rest of the group for a few hours one evening.) Here's Jouni reading to Betsy -- or rather, vice-versa -- at bedtime one night.

It's always interesting to talk to Jouni because he is a fountain of information about topics such as the various national insignias found on the back of one-euro coins, as he is explaining to a recently-interested-in-geography Molly in this picture.

At the end of Jouni's visit, we all traveled to Paris, where he was going to catch his train to Geneva later that day and where the rest of us planned to spend the day (more in a future post). In this picture we are on the train to Paris and Jouni is using his Finnish passport to explain that "Finland" is called something like "Finland" in nearly every language except Finnish (in which it is called "Suomi"). Go figure. Also, in the Clearly Useful Tidbits category, if you ever want to be entertained by neighborhood rivalries, go ask a Finn what the Swedes are like. It's like asking a Minnesotan about the folks over the line in Wisconsin.
