Berries. Yum.

As you may remember, we were lucky enough to hit absolutely the height of the blackberry season back in Olivet, which was delicious, but scratchy, and prone to staining the more ambitious collectors.

Once back in Pennsylvania, we jumped at the invitation to drive into the country a little bit to a U-Pick blueberry place with our friends Laura, Ciara, and Devin. It was hot, but there were prolific bushes in the shade, too, so that's where we played (Betsy and Ciara) and picked (mostly Cricket, Laura, and Molly. Devin split his time). The pictures here were taken at the beginning of the outing, before Cricket got serious about her picking and couldn't be bothered with the camera. We ate a lot (during and after picking), made blueberry slurk (which we also ate), gave some away, and even froze a few.

After the second berry-picking outing the following week, we froze a lot of them so we could have fresh-frozen local berries in the dead of winter, much as Frederick's family would have done if they'd had a deep freezer and a bunch of zip-lock baggies. With snow and ice blanketing everything now, and below-zero wind-chill highs predicted this week, I think it's time for some blueberry muffin poetry now!
