Toussaints vacation: Beach

From Bayonne, we made a short (20-minute or so) drive along the Adour River to the place where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean (shown here, again courtesy of google maps). We got there mid-morning around 10:30, which turned out to be a good thing because parking spaces were really hard to come by in the late afternoon when we left. We spent many hours about where the red marker is in the picture.

It was warm but not hot (this was Oct. 28), and the water was not too cold, so Molly and Betsy had a good time frolicking near the waves. Betsy, who lacks experience with big water like this, got more experience than she wanted after wandering a little too close and getting demolished by a pretty-good-sized wave (the surf at this beach was no joke, and there were tens of surfers in the water right next to us). Fortunately the car was close, so we could fetch dry clothes easily. Molly too had a wave incident, and though she was a little miffed when it happened, she recovered quickly (as shown in this picture).

Betsy spent the rest of the day on dry land having lots of fun in the sand.

Finally, here is a picture of the four of us on the walk that juts out into the ocean (the bottom one seen in the aerial photo above). It's not a great picture -- we were looking right into the afternoon sun -- but we don't have too many of us all together.
